README file for pMELTS output files File Workman_Hart_DMM.melts in the input file in the format expected by alphaMELTS 2. Apart from setting the MELTS code version to pMELTS, selecting temperature 1100 °C or 1300°C, and turning solid phases on or off, this file contains all the instructions needed to execute the isothermal pMELTS runs by selecting menu option 4 (“Execute”) in alphaMELTS 2. There are four directories of output: • pMELTS_1100_isotherm_stable • pMELTS_1100_isotherm_supressgt+plg+liq • pMELTS_1300_isotherm_suppress_liquid • pMELTS_1300_isotherm_supressgt+plg+liq Each of these contains the output of an isothermal series of calculations extending from pressure 4 GPa to 0 in 0.05 GPa steps. In addition to liquid, garnet, and plagioclase, it is necessary to suppress nepheline and k-feldspar to reproduce the metastable calculations in the text. Each output directory contains the following files: • alphaMELTS_tbl.txt — the complete output in alphaMELTS format • Bulk_comp_tbl.txt – a table showing an entry for bulk composition at every calculation (trivial in this case, since every step is the same) • clinopyroxene.tbl – a table of data for clinopyroxene, in MELTS GUI format • garnet.tbl — a table of data for garnet, in MELTS GUI format (absent if garnet was suppressed) • Liquid_comp_tbl.txt – a table of liquid compositions in alphaMELTS format (empty in this case since all calculations are subsolidus) • logfile.txt — a capture of all the commands typed into the alphaMELTS 2 interactive prompt to execute the run • melts-liquid.tbl — a table of liquid data in MELTS GUI format (empty in this case since all calculations are subsolidus) • melts.out — the complete output in MELTS GUI format • olivine.tbl — a table of data for olivine, in MELTS GUI format • orthopyroxene.tbl — a table of data for orthopyroxene, in MELTS GUI format • Phase_main_tbl.txt — thermodynamic data, masses, and compositions of all phases in alphaMELTS format • plagioclase.tbl — a table of data for plagioclase, in MELTS GUI format (absent if plagioclase was suppressed) • Solid_comp_tbl.txt — a table showing an entry for bulk solid composition at every calculation (trivial in this case, since every step is the same) • spinel.tbl — a table of data for spinel, in MELTS GUI format • System_main_tbl.txt — a table of thermodynamic data (including fO2) for the system at each step, in alphaMELTS format For the contents of each alphaMELTS 2 output file and an explanation of the columns, see the alphaMELTS documentation at http://magmasource.caltech.edu. The GUI format output files can be imported into MELTS_Excel for automated plotting, if desired.
